.

A fluorescent light fixture is not meant to call attention to the ballast hidden inside of it that is required to operate. Most people don’t even know it is there or that standard household electricity needs to be altered in order for a fluorescent light to work. Is it possible to expose the ballast as part of the fixture so that it adds aesthetic value and also acknowledges its technological inner workings?

Rotation Notation’s hour hand moves on a 12 hour cycle, powered by the wearer’s movement and is set by its orientation on the wrist. There is no minute or second hand. Time can be accurately read by looking closely at where the hour hand points. 60 holes around the perimeter mark 12 minute increments in a 12 hour cycle. There is no predetermined or primary orientation to the watch. 12 o’clock is wherever you want it to be. The orientation of the watch is set by you with a string looped into one of the 60 holes.

This watch is built with an automatic mechanical movement. There is no stem to set the hour hand or wind the mechanism. So if you want to change the time, remove the old string and add string in the appropriate holes to mark 12 o’clock, 6 o’clock or whatever combination you like. Over time, the accumulation of string leaves behind a history of your notations.

In an empty lobby, smoke-like swirls of light creep from the edges of undulating Corian furniture. When a visitor is present, the light retracts back into the furniture, emerging again once there is stillness.

The Pursuit of Stillness is an interactive projection designed for Acconci Studio’s Corian Furniture Installation in the lobby of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Acconci’s installation is part of year long series celebrating the Centennial Year of the Grand Concourse.

The software was written using Open Frameworks with openCV with Optical Flow. The application controls 25 high speed video loops, each mapped to a trigger position on the floor. The video was shot using a Casio Exilim EX-FH20 and the camera tracking uses an overhead PS3 camera.

At this terminal, where human language is truncated at the point of computer language and computer language is magnified to human scale. Conversation and the subjectivity of language vanishes. This is left.

Is it possible to gesture within the language of photography?
Is it possible to just photograph light?

The constraints of a technological medium are highly significant and should not be overlooked. Exposure time is contingent on the technology of the photographic medium.

There is also an implicit spatial delineation between the interior and exterior of the camera. These technological impositions are highly significant and arbitrary in relationship to an artistic vision.

It is difficult to gesture. It is difficult to say small things.

slow resolution display made out of standard lightbulbs and thermochromic paint.

This display lives at the intersection of digital control and analog output. A matrix of lightbulbs painted with thermochromic paint allows for an image to appear and dissipate analogously to the temperature of each bulb.

The overall effect defies our ordinary understanding of materials and time within technological systems.
In this case, lightbulbs are used for heat and not light. And the refresh rate of an image is constrained to the time it takes for the material of the screen to change temperature.

Here are some images and links to our first prototype. More to come in the future!
